Coker, Alabama
Weather: low 46 degrees, high 54 degrees, cloudy, rain early in the morning
The rain stopped early enough that I was able to take my morning walk at the same time as usual. After we had breakfast, we decided to take a drive down to Aliceville, a small town southwest of Coker. In addition to wanting to see what the little town was about, we were also looking for clues on how to find Greenbow, Forrest Gump's hometown. We had no luck in finding Greenbow, but did find Aliceville.
Aliceville is a town of less than 2500 people. The main industries appear to be timber and farming. During World War II, an air field was built to train army pilots. From 1942 to 1945, German prisoners of war were confined in the area. A museum was built to house artifacts from the prison camp, but it was not open today. After driving to the town, we can see why the prisoners were kept there. Aliceville is a long way from anywhere, and you have to want to be going there to get there. In the 1940s, we can only imagine how isolated the area was.
When we left Aliceville after seeing what the town had to offer (and that only took about 10 minutes), we drove south toward I-59/20. Before we knew it, we had arrived in Meridian, Mississippi. A funny thing about our meanderings across the countryside is that most of the time, we don't know where we will end up going.
The highlight of our time in Meridian was that we had to buy fuel before heading home. We bought diesel for $2.099 per gallon, which is the least we have paid in the last four years. I know these low prices won't last, but we'll enjoy it while we can.
By the time we arrived home, both of us were tired. It was time for some meditation and rest. The remainder of the day was devoted to relaxing by reading, watching television, and surfing the web.
More later, be safe.

Found your blog while hopping around and I came across this post. My grandfathers family are from Aliceville, and we go there every year for a family reunion, the Carson-Lee Reunion. Its actually in a smaller community right on the outskirts of Aliceville called Union Chapel. I have been visiting Aliceville since I was a small child around 5 and I will be 30 this year. When I was a kid the only and I mean only thing to do there was swim at the country club or play glof all at the same place. Or there was the Piggly Wiggly or the Co-op. We are going up for a visit on the 22nd of this month because my grandparents bought some land & a house on some old family land. Its for sure a lifestyle change from Tampa FL to there. Its a simple place, I have always loved it in Aliceville becuase of the laid backness of it all. Ive enjoyed reading over all the places you & your wife have been. What a great way to see the land, and all the small towns that usually get passed by.
Also sorry to hear about your cousin.
Have safe travels!
