Good News For Carolyn

Glen Rose, Texas

Weather: low 30 degrees, high 62 degrees, clear skies

This weather is amazing for the last few days. Lows in the 30s, highs in the 50s and 60s, clear skies. Outstanding!!

Neither of us slept well last night because of the call Carolyn received yesterday about her left shoulder. Someone from our family doctor's office called and said she had a torn rotator cuff, and it looked like surgery was indicated. Our limited experience with this kind of surgery was that it was painful and limiting, taking several months to recover from. When we saw the orthopedic surgeon this morning, he asked Carolyn to describe her symptoms, then performed an examination of her shoulder. Then, he explained what he saw in the x-rays and MRI. He said to an untrained eye, it might appear that her rotator cuff was torn. What he found was that she has bursitis in the shoulder, not a torn rotator cuff. In addition, he said her symptoms were indicative of bursitis, and not the more serious problem.

The doctor explained the options that Carolyn had, including not doing anything, which he did not recommend. He also said she could go through physical therapy, which would take up to several months to be effective. The best option, according to him, was to have an injection of painkillers and steroids placed into the affected area. The doctor said this option would give relief within 2-3 days, and would probably ensure that she would not have any more problems. After debating the various options, Carolyn decided to have the injection. She is feeling much better about the sore shoulder, especially since she will not need to have surgery.

The news from the doctor made us feel so good that we spent a couple of hours out riding in the countryside, enjoying a new feeling of freedom from doctors and treatments. Maybe now we can start living the roaming life again.

New adventures are right down the road.

More later, be safe.
