Fulton Mansion

Rockport, Texas

Weather: low 60 degrees, high 85 degrees, clear skies

Bit by bit, I seem to be able to sleep a little better every night. In a couple of weeks, maybe I'll be rid of the habit of getting up at 0400 hours. Today, I made it until 0600 hours, and Carolyn made it until 0605.

We didn't leave home until almost lunch time, choosing to just laze around. I took the camera with me when I went for a walk this morning and got some pictures to show that the wild flowers are still doing well around here. The picture below is of Indian Blankets, also known as Gaillardia, or Firewheel.

Another flower still doing well here is the Garden Coreopolis.

Since this is a semi-tropical area, the bougainvillea does well here.

We're getting to know this area by driving up and down roads to see where they go. On one street, we found the Fulton Mansion. It was built between 1875 and 1877 by the second president of the Texas Republic. The style is French Second Empire (whatever that is). His family lived in the house until the 1890s. The mansion is now owned and maintained by the state. At the time of it's construction, the house had all the modern conveniences of the day.

Our travels around the area have shown us that local government probably has a good tax base here, with all the houses and properties on waterfront. It sure has changed a lot since we came through here about 16 years ago.

More later, be safe.
